A part of the American Trails Advancing Trails Webinar Series, Horses And Trails – How To Be Successful With Both!discusses top-notch trails and facilities for equestrians. Join the presenter, Jan Hancock, in this detailed educational journey about equestrians, and learn the elements to success in planning, designing, and building trails and related recreational facilities that function successfully for horseback riders and their animals. This webinar includes at least 15 minutes at the end for questions and answers.

Jan will utilize photographs, architectural drawings, charts, tables, and related illustrative educational materials specifically developed for planning and designing successful equestrian trails.

Webinar participants will learn how to:

  • Identify the design elements that can be immediately applied to  equestrian-use trails and trail systems.
  • Apply planning and design guidelines for achieving desirable equestrian  trail features, including trail lengths, clearances, tread widths, grades, slopes, surfaces, safety features for at-grade and below-grade  roadway crossings, and meeting equestrian trail users’ safety needs.
  • Recognize the site-specific features of a recreational trail system that provides amenities for equestrian users with disabilities.  Design elements include site selection, universal design facilities and fixtures, accessible shared trails, accessible equestrian facilities, recommended and therapeutic riding programs.
  • Describe the features of an equestrian recreational site that includes designs to help protect water quality; manage horse manure; reduce noxious and invasive weeds; reduce soil erosion, root damage, and animal diseases; and identify flora and fauna dangerous to equines.
