Trail Solutions: Customer Reviews

"IMBA is really dialed in in terms of putting together an understandable message and helping people figure out what it takes to make a trail that will stand up to years and years of abuse."

-- Kevin Keeler, National Park Service

"My job is trail building for the Municipality of Whistler here in British Columbia, and I purchased 10 copies for my work crew. I had to actually sit them down and get them to read the book as they are all "doers" rather than readers. Well instantly our new trails changed their complexion and for the better - we all agree. Trail Solutions is a really big breath of fresh air and has converted the converted, so to speak. Hats off to the writers and contributors, and to all the people at IMBA. You are obviously persons of vision. Thank you."

-- Randy Symons, trail crew leader for the Municipality of Whistler

"IMBA's new trail building book is simply amazing. The depth of information and the high-quality is a sight to behold. We encourage everyone to purchase one for themselves."

-- Justin Vander Pol, Back Country Bicycle Trails Club

"Excellent resource book for any mountain biker, not just those interested in trail building. This book covers the basics to advanced with clarity. Recommend the book to all mountain bikers."

-- Michael McGraw

"Congratulations to the IMBA team responsible for the production of the Trail Solutions Book. "Building Better Trails" was 10 out 10 , Trail Solutions is definitely 150 out of 10. With "Trail Solutions" behind us we cannot fail to succeed in convincing land managers that we have the know how and the resources at out disposal to build exceptional sustainable trails."

-- Peter McLean, Queensland, Australia

"This edition is leaps and bounds better than the last, with full color pictures, drawings and diagrams. 273 pages will help you figure out the solution to any trail dilemma. Maurice and I both strongly recommend this resource if you're interested in creating or maintaining sustainable trails."

-- Michael Brown, Dirt Rag Magazine

"The new book adds a wealth of information about safe and enduring methods to construct and maintain trails for all users groups, especially bikes. The new edition includes guidelines and construction techniques for the wild side of the sport--freeriding and gravity-specific information that the sport desperately needs at present... The IMBA team is on top of it. If we stay focused on circumventing conflicts with other user groups, all mountain bikers may ride free someday. Start with a dream and march forward. IMBA's efforts as of late are huge first steps."

-- Richard Cunningham, Mountain Bike Action Magazine

"The Trail Solutions book was handed directly to the local land manager. After reviewing they are now willing to let us take the next step in trail construction, adding technical terrain features to some of the existing trails. Thank you again."

-- Mark Peterson, President WHIMPs

The new IMBA Trail Solutions book is well worth your time and money. It has every thing from how to identify the land owner to putting the finishing touches on a great trail, and everything in between. Everything involved would be too much for us to post here. Go to the IMBA website and check out the book, it is well worth the $$$. Good luck.

-- "Mtwmbw" from the web

Well over 250 pages of trail building and design information including details about construction, maintaining, use of tools, freeride and singletrack. You name it, they thought of it. Full of detailed diagrams and photos, this is guaranteed to be the bible of trail building for mountain bikers, clubs and land managers. Quite simply, it is good stuff.

-- Single Speed Outlaw

"I purchased the IMBA trailbuilding book. It contains a wealth of information which is presented in a well organized manner... I recommend this book to anyone interested not only in mountain biking but using trails for recreation... especially to people who would be inclined to perform stewardship for these resources."

-- Richard Lum

We at Michigan Mountain Biking Association use "Trail Solutions" as the textbook for our advanced trailbuilding class. Every newly-certified trail coordinator is issued the book as part of their REI-sponsored Stewardship toolkit. We create handouts from the book for the introductory classes, on specific topics such as benchcutting and trail closure. We also refer to it when answering technical questions put by land managers in the proposal/review phases of a project. We find it to be authoritative, as it conforms to existing standards, but offers a better presentation format. The graphics are particularly useful.

-- Dan Harrison, Director MMBA/REI Trail School

Excellent guide for general-amateur use. I think that your trailbuilding courses are necessary for correct application. Congratulations.

-- Nicolas Adamis Civil Engineer - Public Works Contractor Athens - GREECE

This book has many fantastic features. I have done quite alot of professional and voluntary trail work and this book contains all that I have experienced and MUCH MUCH MORE!!! A must have for ANY mountain biker or trail users in general! FANTASIC WORK GUYS!

-- Tim Chadd - Australia

Trail Solutions has set the standard for trail building and repair in our 5,600 acre park. our trails must support bikes,runners/hikers and horses which really puts your book to the test. .it is so well illustrated that it is a big help to those volunteers who may only look at the pictures.

-- Charles Benner, trail builder, Maryland

I bought this book along with 40 acres of very rugged land. During the winter of last year I flagged out 2 1/2 miles or so of technical single track. I have about 1 1/4 miles finished. So far the trail has been built by me, two dogs and this book. The Trail Solutions book allowed me to avoid most mistakes and certainly saved me more time than you can imagine. The trail has survived several heavy rains with no damage to speak of. I attribute 90 percent of this to information that I gained from this book. Gotta give it "Two Thumbs Up"

-- Scott Egbert, Hemet, CA

The Trail Solutions guide should be required reading for any trailbuilder.

-- Haydn Tilley, Rockwheelers, Townsville, Australia

This is a great resource for beginnners who want to give back as well as experienced maintainers/builders. I can't always make the local maintenance days. With this book it motivates me to do some work by myself on days off. Very clear and enlightening. Thanks, ride on,

-- Rudy Barney, Richmond, Va

If you ride you should build, if you build you should have this book.

-- Mike McGraw

While this manual is primarily directed towards the mountain biking-trail working community, it is still useful for others who work on hiking and equestrian trails as well. It would be nice to see this type of manual expanded or sequelled to be a comprehensive set of guides for all trail user-trail maintenance groups. Nonetheless, it is great addition to any trail worker's (or designer's) library. Don't build trail without it!! Overall a very good job!

-- Eric Schwab Crew Leader, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado

This is such a well thought out book I purchased two for myself. Should be on all trail builders "must read" list.

-- Ed Bartunek - Chicago Area Mountain Bikers (CAMBr)

This book is a must for all your shoveling efforts.

-- Tom Coyle

Our club has bought "Trail Solutions" and given them to local government recreation divisions to show what proper trail building involves. Helps greatly with showing bikers are serious about the trails, impact, durability, and the continual advocacy necassary for access.

-- Mark Fisher - ride coordinator, Single Track Mind Cycle Club

I work for the North Caroliona Outward Bound School in many different roles. "Trail Solutions" has been a great asset to our service curriculum. It enables me to break down trail-work into simple easy to follow guidlines and share that with staff who in turn teach students. Thanks for putting out a great, easy to use, well illustrated book!

-- Adam "Scooter" Timm, Course Director, North Carolina Outward Bound School

I think your book is great. I wish it had more info on what equestrians need, but I understand that IMBA is about mountain biking. Thanks for your great work! Your book is our bible.

-- Andrea Davis, Ukiah Valley Trail Group

I've used many resources over the years, and Trail Solutions is the best. It's clear. It has modern engineering and design standards thoroughly explained. Best of all, it covers topics crucial to successful trails, but ignored in other publications (working with property managers, working with volunteers, etc.). Trail Solutions is so complete and comprehensive that it has become my single source of information on trail building.

-- Rich Ries, Big Ring Adventure Team, Madison, IN

The information provided in "Trail Solutions" gave me the knowledge and confidence to take on the job as the volunteer trail crew leader at our local trail system. Our trails serve as evidence of the solid information this book provides.

-- tom crotty, M.O.R.E. mountain bike club

"Trail Solutions " has been an invaluable tool for our discussions with land managers. Being able to put such a detailed and comprehensive trail building guide in front of them as an introduction to any discussions has helped to indicate right from the start that we are committed to long term sustainabile trails and that we have the resources behind us to help make it happen.

-- Peter Mozzy McLean, Townsville, Australia

I have used this book many times when teaching land managers about the trails we would like to build on their land.

-- Tim Wegner

A must for all aspiring trail builders.

-- Gary Galpin

The book opened my mind of how sustainable trails are really built, thanx!

-- Picco

"Trail Solutions" has proved an invaluable resource and an inspiration when I began transforming my property into tight, twisty singletrack. With excellent diagrams and concise instructions, I was able to build switchback corners, interesting technical sections, bridges and fast downhills that blend in with the terrain. So far, with the help of "Trails Solutions", I have constructed over seven miles of incredible singletrack that will be enjoyed for many years to come.

-- Eric Harlow Russell, MA

Excellent tool for both active trail builder and land manager. We bought several copies and give them to land managers to "open the door" for MTB use.

-- Marty Weigel Metro Mountain Bikers, your Milwaukee WORBA Chapter

Trail Solutions reflects IMBA at its finest. It's by far and away the best trailbuilding book on the market. I strongly encourage all trail enthusiasts to purchase a copy.

-- Don Vogel, IMBA Rep. KY

A Great resourse. I've forwarded to onto many landmanagers in our local area as "THE" source on trailbuilding- mountain bike or otherwise.

-- TJ Walker Prevost, Quebec, Canada

This is a great resource for anyone getting into trail building. Our local forest service uses it for a reference...what other testimony do you need?

-- Phil Busching, South Dakota

More detail on freeride would be great. We are using the book in urban, suburban, and rural settings with a wide range of clients. It could be helpful in the nezt edition to include a set of typical plan drawings. Thanks....great effort!

I learned a lot and have put it to use with about 120 hours of volunteer trailbuilding, this year. I have wished for more ideas and info on bridges, and methods of construction with natural materials. Also, the book seems to be written from the viewpoint of a western climate. I wished for more discussion aobut different types of soil, and climates. Over-all, it is the best collection of modern mountainbike trailbuilding techniques to come along. Thanks.

-- Bob Slayden, Nashsville

in the next book please include more examples like shown on page 212. on a trail that can not be move and has water standing on the trail we build a sump off the trail to hold the water. we would buld a "rolling grade dip" to conect the trail to the sump. the last step is to create a barrier over the sump with logs. i think this book is our first impresion with land managers. state reps sould be able to buy at a discount or for free to supply to land manager we are working with. Thanks

-- wayne

While the book covers excellent information on working with land managers and groups it misses on the actual technical aspects that I had hoped to read more about. It does appear that you have a new book that does focus on those technicalities. I guess the title was more suggestive of the technical aspect, maybe the title should have been a guide to managing the building of sweet single track in your community. But it should get people thinking about the importance of community involvement. WIthout community there is no trails.

-- Tony Shumskas

Trail Solutions came out at the perfect time for me. I had just been bitten by the building bug, (mainly free-ride), and it has really helped esp. in the area of Land Access/Ownership. We have a very good relationship with our local Dept. of Nat. Resources manager, and an ever expanding trail scene. Thanks IMBA
